If you want to:

-Play all your favorite songs
-Play great rhythm with a band
-Be able to back up a singer
-Make other musicians love playing with you
-Play solos anywhere on the neck

…then you have to master bar chords.

This may sound quite unusual. Especially the last one. But it’s the TRUTH. You see, often intermediate players think they are “boring”...

Big mistake.

Let me prove it to you in these couple examples below. Here are 3 incredible songs that use bar chords.

So let’s dive in, starting with…

1. Summertime Blues (The Who Live At Leeds)

This is a classic song originally written in 1958 by Eddie Cochran and his manager. The version to look at for bar chords though is by the Who recorded live at Leeds.

It starts off in the key of A. Then changes to the key of B later in the song. Pete Townshend uses bar chords to make this shift a breeze.

That is a huge advantage you get when you master bar chords.

2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Beatles)
This classic starts off with a descending chord progression but then in the bridge changes keys.

The bridge uses some beautifully placed bar chords that really make the song sing. The Beatles did this all the time.

3. Bad Moon Rising (CCR)
Here’s another 3 chord gem. Except in this one, John Fogerty pulls a sneaky move. He tunes his guitar to an alternate tuning. This makes the bar chords he plays instantly have a brand-new sound.

They sound deeper and more full.

Fogerty doesn’t stop there though, he then plays an entire solo based on bar chord shapes.

These are just 3 songs that give you a glimpse into the power and potential of bar chords.

Master bar chords and you can play anything you want.

But a lot of players have trouble with playing them relaxed.

Their hands get all cramped and fatigued. Or they feel their muscles wearing away is holding them back.

But 99% of the time it's a symptom of improper technique.

In fact, I played bar chords wrong for years.

I wasn’t playing them as clean, or as relaxed as I could.
