20 year old jade plant repotting and light pruning as the start of a big jade plant bonsai project.

This is a 20+ year old Crassula ovata plant that belonged to my grandparents which have sadly passed away. Now I'm taking care of this jade plant and I intend to train it into a big jade bonsai tree.

Occasional repotting is one of the operations required as part of jade plant care. It involves removing as much of the old soil as possible and planting the jade in some new soil. I'm transplanting the jade plant in a shallow container to lower the height of its canopy and also as part of its bonsai training. Repotting a jade plant doesn't usually involve too much effort when it was previously planted in some well draining soil. I wasn't so lucky since this jade was growing in some plain garden soil.

I'm also doing a bit of pruning just to remove drooping branches and those that are crossing or dead. A thorough pruning session of this Crassula ovata plant will be following once it gains more vigor to assure that it will explode with new growth once it is pruned. So stay tuned for future work on this wonderful plant.

I'm keeping my Large jade plant in a Mars Hydro 120/60 cm (4'/2') grow tent equipped with a SP3000 grow light. Mars Hydro products are available here:
