STORYLINE

Staff from the German embassy in Baghdad started leaving on Monday after the foreign ministry in Berlin called on all Germans to leave Iraq "immediately".

The ministry announced that once all the Germans had safely left Iraq, the embassy would be closed down.

On Friday, the foreign ministry had warned Germans against trips to Iraq, stepping up an earlier advisory from two weeks ago that did not mention urgency.

Since February 10, the foreign ministry has been advising Germans in Iraq to be prepared to leave the country at short notice.

An initial warning cautioning Germans against visiting Iraq was issued on March 5.

Elsewhere in Baghdad on Monday, several media organisations were packing up, ready to leave Iraq on advice from their respective governments.

Some media inevitably will stay as they did in 1991, but most will leave.

If there is a war, Baghdad and its environs are likely to be a focal point of fighting.
