When you flush the toilet, your wastewater can go to many different places. Lagoons are one important tool that can help treat that wastewater at a community-level before it’s released back into the environment.
Lagoons are an efficient, lower-cost wastewater solution with a small carbon footprint. They can be particularly beneficial for small, rural, and tribal communities that are less densely populated and may not be able to afford expensive mechanical wastewater treatment plants. Lagoons can be quite effective, as long as they’re maintained properly.
