The Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL), the government agency overseeing the construction of the greenfield international airport in Jewar, has informed the Uttar Pradesh government that about 78.11% work on Noida airport has been completed, but owing to the slow pace of work on the terminal building, the project’s completion deadline of September 29, 2024, has been deferred by seven months. Now, Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), the concessionaire, has rescheduled the completion date from September 29, 2024, to April 2025. One of the key reasons for the slow pace of work is the delay in procuring imported steel that is needed to build the terminal building and other associated infrastructure. However, NIAL has decided to impose a penalty for the delay in completion of the project. As per the concession agreement, a grace period of 91 days is allowed, and after that, NIAL has the mandate to impose a penalty of ₹10 lakh per day for the period of delay.
Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar Airport and officially Noida International Greenfield Airport, is an under-construction international airport being constructed near the town of Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) will be the implementing agency on behalf of the government of Uttar Pradesh. The airport is to be developed through a public-private partnership model (PPP). The proposed plan is to build a two runway airport by 2025, and at a future date, to expand it into a 7,200 acres (2,900 ha) 6-runway airport. According to the proposed plan, the airport will handle 5 million passengers per annum (MPA) initially and up to 60 MPA to 120 MPA, after its expansion over a period of 30 years. The project site is located 72 kilometres (45 mi) from Indira Gandhi International Airport, the airport that currently serves the needs of the entire National Capital Region and is quickly reaching its peak capacity; 36 km from Bulandshahr, 60 km from Noida and 70 km from Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Mathura, about 48 km from Greater Noida, 65 km from Aligarh, 65 km from Gurgaon and 130 km from Agra. It will be connected to the Yamuna Expressway, allowing domestic and international tourists to reach Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan.
