Waverly Woodson Jr was a combat medic at Omaha Beach on D-Day during World War 2. Nominated for the Medal of Honor, he saved the lives of 200 men.

Omaha beach saw some of the hardest fighting on D-Day. Waverly Woodson, a combat medic with the all black 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion is landing with the third wave of soldiers.

Woodson's landing craft is hit several times and Waverly Woodson himself is wounded with shrapnel. Despite this, he makes his way onto Omaha Beach and sets up his aid station.

For the next 30 hours Waverly Woodson works tirelessly with the other medics to remove bullets, administer plasma and even amputate a foot.

In all, it's estimated that Waverly Woodson treated more than 200 men.

After D-Day, Woodson was nominated for the Distinguished Service Cross. This was later upgraded to the Medal of Honor. Unfortunately this never materialised and Woodson would receive the lower award of the Bronze Star.
