When George Chapman was arrested for poisoning three women, Inspector Frederick Abberline made a shocking statement: "You've got Jack the Ripper at last." This is the true crime story that connects the Borough Poisoner to Victorian London's most infamous serial killer.
George Chapman, born Seweryn Kłosowski, arrived in Whitechapel in 1887 - one year before Jack the Ripper began his murders. Chapman had surgical training in Poland. The Ripper murders showed surgical precision. When Chapman moved to America, the Ripper killings stopped. His wife claimed he tried to stab her with a knife in New Jersey.
Inspector Abberline, who led the Jack the Ripper investigation for years, believed until his death that Chapman and the Ripper were the same person. But most serial killer experts disagree. The methods were too different. Jack the Ripper was violent and frenzied. George Chapman was cold, calculated, patient. The Ripper used knives. Chapman used poison.
The trial for the Borough Poisoner murders lasted days. The jury deliberated for just 11 minutes. Guilty. George Chapman was executed by hanging at Wandsworth Prison on April 7, 1903.
Charlie Chaplin wrote in his autobiography that as a young boy, he stopped at Chapman's pub and asked for water. The serial killer served him personally. Chaplin drank from a glass handed to him by a murderer and lived. Three women weren't so lucky.
