Borough High Street leads up to London Bridge which was the only crossing in to the City of London for about 600 years. Therefore all journeys to and from the south began and ended there, leading to it being festooned with coaching inns. All but one have gone, but the names of these long forgotten inns have been engraved on to the pavement next to the alleyways that once housed them.
