Time Pilot 84 (arcade MAME 60Hz no commentary)

Gameplay of the first nine levels of Time Pilot '84, followed by far more of the attract sequence than is needed. (I think I left it unattended while it was recording.) :) This enjoyable shoot-em-up is the 1984 Konami arcade sequel to Time Pilot, which was released in 1982, and I believe was quite a popular game. As I understand it, Time Pilot '84 wasn't distributed as widely as its prequel, but was still moderately successful in some territories.

Time Pilot '84 takes the basic premise of Time Pilot — shooting a certain number of enemies until a mother-ship appears, which has to be destroyed to proceed to the next level — and it adds a few more elements to mix things up: guided missiles, and new enemies, both on the ground and in the air, which can only be destroyed with missiles.

The original Time Pilot was a good looking and sounding game, with addictive gameplay in which you're battling increasingly-advanced enemies through the ages: from 1910 to the year 2001. This sequel leaves the the exact scenario a little more vague: implying that you're travelling further into the future, but never saying what time-period you're in at any given time. The metallic bas-relief landscape you fly over always looks at futuristic on one level as the next. Only the landscape colour changes, while the enemies become increasingly difficult.

Note the squadron of original Time Pilot ships and the bi-plane that makes an appearance at a couple of points, as a cute call-back for fans.
