Matthew Wright was joined by Nicholas Williams, a former UK Ministry of Defence, EU and NATO official, now Senior Associate Fellow of the European Leadership Network.

Consultancy group Public First and Stonehaven found that in the UK and Germany, 59% of voters are in favour of a European army, and in France, 50 per cent of adults want European countries to pool their military might.

By contrast, 11% oppose the idea.

The defence expert told Matthew that he believes the language is important - specifying that an 'army is impossible', but that a 'defence capability more or less independent from the US was always mooted and enthusiastically pursued by countries like France.'

It comes as President Zelenskyy says that 'Russia does not want a ceasefire, and we see it. The whole world sees it.'

19 people, including 9 children, were killed last night following an attack on Zelenskyy's home city, Kryvyi Rih.
