India is undergoing a major transformation in urban mobility, driven by the rapid development of smart cities and a renewed focus on sustainable transport. With urban populations surging, the government is investing heavily in integrated, tech-enabled infrastructure to ease congestion, reduce pollution, and enhance commuter experiences.
At the heart of this revolution is the Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, which now covers over 100 cities. These cities are prioritizing transit-oriented development, seamless multimodal integration, and smart traffic management. Metro rail networks have expanded rapidly—cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kanpur have launched new lines, while established systems in Delhi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai continue to grow.
Electric mobility is another key pillar. Under the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme, public transport fleets are being electrified. Electric buses are now operational in cities like Kolkata, Lucknow, and Indore, helping reduce carbon emissions.
Digital innovation is playing a central role. Smart traffic signals, AI-based surveillance, and real-time transit apps are improving safety and reducing commute times. Cities like Bhopal and Surat have implemented Integrated Command and Control Centres (ICCCs) for better urban governance and transport monitoring.

Through a blend of infrastructure development, green mobility, and digital governance, India’s smart cities are setting new benchmarks in urban transport. As more cities embrace this model, India’s vision of cleaner, more connected, and commuter-friendly urban spaces is fast becoming a reality.
