Little Petra, also known as Siq al-Barid (literally "the cold canyon"), is an archaeological site north of Petra and the town of Wadi Musa in the Ma'an Governorate of Jordan. Like Petra, it is a Nabataean site with buildings carved into the walls of sandstone canyons. As the name suggests, it is much smaller and consists of three larger open areas connected by a 450-meter-long gorge. It is part of the Petra Archaeological Park, although it is accessible separately, and has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is often visited by tourists in conjunction with Petra itself, as it is free and usually less crowded.
Like Petra, it was probably built during the height of Nabataean influence in the 1st century BC. While the purpose of some of the buildings is not clear, archaeologists believe that the entire complex was a suburb of Petra, the Nabataean capital, and served to house Silk Road traders. After the decline of the Nabataeans, the complex stood empty for centuries and was used only by Bedouin nomads. Along with neighboring Beidha, Little Petra was excavated in the later 20th century by Diana Kirkbride and Brian Byrd.
In 2010, they discovered surviving artwork in a biclinium, a dining hall, in one of the caves, depicting grapes, vines and putti in great detail and with a colorful palette, probably in homage to the Greek god Dionysus and the enjoyment of wine. The 2,000-year-old ceiling frescoes in the Hellenistic style have since been restored. They are not only the only known example of a Nabataean figural interior painting in situ, but also a very rare large-scale example of Hellenistic painting, superior even to similar later Roman paintings at Herculaneum.
