Elvina Ibru tells Chude Jideonwo the story behind her weight loss.
“So I had a chance to go to the Bahamas, and the first to-do thing on the list, swimming with the dolphins. So 7 o’clock I don wake up, I don baff, I don wear my swim suit. I don go look for where dem dey swim with dolphins. Then I walked majestically and said, “Yes, I want to swim with dolphins”. They said yes madam, that’s alright, but you have to wear a wet suit. They have this slight... they speak like Jamaicans but not that conc.

“I said which one be wet suit, they con describe: that thing wey all those deep-sea divers wear. Then I said but you won’t have my size. They say, ‘No madam, we have it’.

“[[[Meanwhile, me like a person wey go enter shop for England]]]. You go to a plus sized shop, it stops at 32, it’s not my size. I can’t even find because it’s even beyond the largest size in a plus size shop because then, regular shops usually stops at 18. If you want to go plus size you now go to a store for 18 and above and they used to stop most of them at 32. 32 sef no be my size so I was just looking at them and say maybe they have people like me in Bahamas, it’s possible.

“Na so dem go bring the so-called massive wetsuit and it was a mere size 24. In those days, a size 24 was like “what is that?!”. So I said this thing is not going to fit, they said just try it, the thing no even pass my ankle. So I started begging them, I said please I’ll wear my swimsuit, they said no, that this thing is protective. That if the dolphin butts against me that I can sue them. I said give me paper let me sign, dem no gree, and I cried and I cried and I cried, and I said to myself, ‘Elvina, one day you’re going to go back and you’re going to swim with the dolphins".

“Fast forward to 2015. I went for my niece’s wedding in Miami. First to-do thing on the list: swim with dolphins. I got there they said, ‘Yes ma’am, so what size are you?’ I said give me size 14 very fast, very quickly, you know, and I wore it, and that was one of the happiest days of my life.”
