Death Crimson (デスクリムゾン) is a 1996 light gun railshooter developed by Ecole Software for the Sega Saturn. Widely panned by critics, the game's infamous reputation actually boosted its sales and helped it achieve a sort of cult status among Japanese gamers. Death Crimson sold so well in fact that it spawned two sequels! Today even used copies command a fairly hefty sum.

While I am emulating this and using a controller, I can still see why hit detection is so poor. Normally, all light gun games utilize grids to determine where a shot will land, and there are thousand upon thousands of possible hit points on the screen. In Death Crimson though, the screen is simply divided into a 12x9 grid. That means there are only 108 places where a shot will register! Because the screen is divided into such large portions, you'll find yourself unintentionally firing on adjacent portions and completely missing the intended target.

Between the terrible gameplay, graphics, and sound (that fucking synth accordion), Death Crimson actually manages to make some of the most primitive 8-bit light gun games appear downright brilliant in comparison. Without a doubt, it's the absolute worst the Saturn has to offer. Play at your own peril.

FUN FACT: The location featured in the game's opening cinematic is part of a network of Meiji-era coastal defenses along the islands of Tomogashima or more specifically, Okinoshima. These fortifications were constructed in order to counter foreign warships that might enter the Inland Sea. Tomogashima never saw combat and was abandoned by the Imperial Army following World War II. It now serves as a tourist attraction within the much larger Setonaikai National Park.
