👋Hello! 🙂 The Tvashtar Paterae, area where the eruption starts in the video, is a volcanic area located near the north pole of the Jovian moon Io. The area is named after an ancient Hindu deity. The area is about 30 km long.

The video I am proposing today, at least for me, has something magical and magnetic about it. It is an AI reconstruction of the five low-resolution shots taken during the New Horizons probe's passage close to the gas giant Jupiter.

The images were captured, in black and white, by the LORRI (Long Range Reconnaissance Imager) camera. Just think that this camera was able to capture Io at a distance of 3.8 million km in a time span of 8 minutes between 23:50 and 23:58 UTC on 1 March 2007. Here the reconstruction is in colour, again by means of AI: it is mainly used to enhance the plume (here in blue) coming out of Io's volcanic area. The colours of the planet, on the other hand, were generated by mapping the real ones, as per the 2019 footage.

Obviously, intermediate frames were also generated to show more fluidly the progress of the gas and debris descending on the moon. It's basically like a giant fountain.

Can you imagine? It's a bigger and more massive moon than our Earth's Moon: it has a diameter of 3643 km compared to the Moon's 3474 km! Can you imagine how such an eruption would look from Earth?

In reality, the eruption would have been even bigger: it extended for a beauty of 330 km from the surface of Io, but from the point of view of the probe only a small part of the event was seen, the phenomenon, in fact, took place in the hidden part of the Jovian satellite that would correspond to about 130 km below the outer edge of the satellite that we are seeing in the video.
