Does the Torah Talk About Islam? Evidence & Analysis

Many people ask an important question: Is Islam mentioned in the Torah? While the word “Islam” itself does not appear in the Torah, many scholars believe that Islamic beliefs, values, and concepts are deeply connected to the messages found in Jewish scriptures. To understand this, we must first understand what Islam truly means.

The word Islam comes from the Arabic root “salaam,” which means peace and submission. Islam teaches submission to One God, obedience to His commandments, and following His prophets. When we look at the Torah, we find these same core principles repeated again and again.

The Torah strongly emphasizes pure monotheism. In Deuteronomy 6:4, it says: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One.” This belief is identical to the Islamic concept of Tawheed, the oneness of God. Islam rejects idol worship, just as the Torah strictly forbids associating partners with God.

Another strong connection is prophethood. Islam teaches belief in all prophets sent by God, including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and others—many of whom are central figures in the Torah. Prophet Moses, known as Musa in Islam, is one of the most important prophets in both traditions. His mission to guide people to worship one God and live by divine law aligns perfectly with Islamic teachings.

Some Muslim scholars also point to passages in the Torah that may refer to future prophets. For example, Deuteronomy 18:18 speaks of a prophet like Moses who would come from among the brethren of Israel. Muslims believe this could be a reference to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as he came from the descendants of Ishmael, the brother of Isaac.

The moral and legal teachings of the Torah also closely resemble Islamic law. Commands related to justice, honesty, charity, fasting, cleanliness, and social responsibility are found in both Islam and the Torah. Even dietary laws, such as avoiding pork and consuming lawful food, show strong similarities.

It is important to note that Judaism and Islam are distinct religions with their own laws and traditions. However, from an Islamic perspective, the Torah is considered a revealed scripture originally sent by God, though Muslims believe it was later altered over time.

In conclusion, while Islam as a religion came centuries after the Torah, its core message already exists within it—the worship of one God, obedience to divine law, and guidance through prophets. Understanding these shared foundations can help promote mutual respect, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence between faiths.
