This book offers a modular, teachable curriculum about what we call awkward archives, that is, archives that cause disquieting frictions and sit uncomfortably in the contemporary world. These drafts comprise a series of site-based pedagogic modules, which depart from conversations with archivists who let their unease with the archives become a productive, troubling heuristic. Each module is devised for teaching and reflection on anthropology, collections, organisations, and modalities of fieldwork. It is an open-access publication that encourages reshuffling and reuse in new contexts and juxtapositions.

For this iteration, we will reflect on difficult heritage in the everyday and the question of how we can work with racist and problematic materials in careful ways that neither reproduce their violent content nor confront users with materials they did no choose to see. We will evoke ways of bringing ethnographic practice to bear on contexts beyond the confines of the discipline of anthropology.
