Vinicius Romanini is is a professor at the School of Communications and Arts (ECA), at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil, the scientific editor of Semeiosis (transdisciplinary journal of semiotics), coordinator of the SemioData group. Prof. Romanini is also a former president of the Brazilian Society of Cognitive Sciences (SBCC) and co-editor of the book "Peirce and Biosemiotics: a Guess at the Riddle of Life" (Springer). Here is the abstract for his talk:

From Socrates to Kant, Western philosophy has primarily conceived of the self as the individual center that unites both sensible intuition and knowable experience. Peirce refutes this tradition and positions the self as the center of ignorance and illusion, proposing the concept of "commens," or "collective of minds welded together," as the only possible path for knowledge. The semiotic commens is the collective self of communication, communion, re-connection, and carries an almost religious sense. We will analyze the concept of the semiotic self through the aspects that make up the sign in an attempt to find the dynamism that organizes our self-representation as participants of universal semiosis.
