An old derelict sugar windmill in St. Andrew, Barbados

Years ago, sugarcane stalks were crushed in large, wind driven mills to produce raw cane juice. The juice was then boiled to make brown sugar and molasses.

This is just one example of the many old mills that dot the landscape across the island of Barbados.
