This next video, the fifth in a series of videos dedicated to Data Services Manager (DSM) version 2.2 from VMware by Broadcom, focuses on the ability to scale down the resources allocated to a virtual machine (VM) that is running the Postgres database. Whilst scale up of resources has been available since the release of DSM 2.x, the scale down feature is something that we have only just introduced support for. This now allows administrators to add additional resources to the Postgres database during something like a 'Black Friday' event or 'End of quarter' event where the database is busier than usual and requires additional resources. But now once the event has passed, the resources can be released once again from the database.

The scale down and scale up are both achieved by changing the VM Class associated with the database. The VM Class is a construct which defines the size of the VMs, from a compute and memory perspective, used by the database.

The video will look at how to modify the settings of an existing database, and choose a smaller VM class, thus scaling down the resource that its VM is using. This clearly demonstrates the benefits of not only virtualizing databases to run on vSphere, but also the benefits of having them provisioned and managed by Data Services Manager.
