Interviews Only Voices Celebrating Black Excellence Parade

This video is one of the most powerful and uplifting street interviews I’ve ever done. At the African American Day Parade in Harlem, New York City, I walked the streets for half a day,, capturing the sounds of marching bands, drums, and dancing crowds, mixing them with voices that spoke only positivity.

My question was simple: “What is your favorite thing about Africans?” The answers I received were deep, emotional, and inspiring. Some people didn’t want to participate, and that’s okay. But many did, and what they shared reminded me why I keep going, why I pray for all of US United As ONE ☝️ , and why I love doing this work.

The journey started with two ladies selling homemade juices. They told me they love everything about African people, Black Americans, and anyone who originated from the continent — essentially all of us. Their favorite thing was the afro, the natural hair, the God-given crown worn proudly, though they also noted it’s less and less common today.

Then I met two women leaving the parade. In just a few minutes, we touched on centuries of history. They spoke about the difference between Africans and African Americans descended from slavery, who are often considered “Black people” here. One of the women told me she traveled to Senegal. She described visiting Gorée Island, once a shipping point where enslaved people were sent like cargo to Europe, North America, and South America. She saw the House of Slaves, the “door of no return,” and the two cells to the right of it — one open, one sealed — once used to break the spirits of those who resisted. She said she felt trapped souls still inside, and that she cried when she visited. Yet out of that pain, she found inspiration. She believes Senegal will lead the next African revolution, setting an example for the continent, just as Burkina Faso once did.

Later, I spoke with people who said Africans are resilient — that even though history tried to break them, they always come out on top, without holding grudges. They don’t return slavery with revenge, but with strength, grace, and forgiveness. Others reminded me how the world copies African culture — from hair and music to fashion and dance — because of its creativity and influence.

At one point, I joked about being a white man who can’t dance, and asked for advice. The response was simple but powerful: “Just be yourself. People love you for being you, not for pretending.”

One man told me about his discipline — that at 40 years old, he looks 19 because he doesn’t drink, doesn’t do drugs, and stays fit with daily workouts, push-ups, sit-ups, fruits, and vegetables. Another told me he was helping people move back to the continent, and that he had visited Uganda, Nigeria, Egypt, Rwanda, and Senegal. He even started learning Wolof to better connect with the large Senegalese community in Harlem.

I joined a Baye Fall gathering connected to Mame CHEIKH IBRAHIMA FALL , where people shared food, coffee, prayers, chanting, and sacred songs — proof that in the heart of New York, African traditions remain alive, safe, and welcoming.

I spoke with women proud to be African American, celebrating their first parade. One of them loved the phrase “We are” — two small words with endless power. Others spoke about strength, unity, family, and holding on to culture and art, even in the face of challenges.

There were cops who shared what they liked too: the culture, the music, the people celebrating together, and their role in keeping everyone safe. A white lady who had lived in Harlem for decades told me she simply loved the neighborhood, loved the people, and wanted nothing but peace.

From babies to grandparents, the day was filled with joy, music, dancing, and community. The drums echoed deep into the heart, and every answer reminded me of the beauty of resilience, history, and hope.

This video is not just about a question. It’s about voices, spirit, memory, and pride. The title — “What’s Good About Black People” — may sound like clickbait, but the real purpose is to uplift, inspire, and remind us all of the greatness within. Watch, listen, and let yourself be carried by the strength of a community that continues to rise.
