Grown from corms, gladiolus (Gladiolus spp.) produces tall flowering stems that make impressive cut flowers. Hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 7 and warmer, gladiolus works well as a container plant where garden space is limited or in cooler climates. Plant gladiolus in pots in late winter or spring, when garden centers typically sell corms.
Fill a pot with well-drained potting soil until it is 2 inches below the rim. Gladiolus requires good drainage, otherwise the corms will rot. Select a container with at least one drainage hole to ensure the bulbs do not sit in wet, soggy soil. A container that is at least 12 inches in diameter and 16 inches deep works well for gladiolus.
Push the soil aside with your hands and plant the gladiolus corms 6 inches deep and one to two inches apart. Plant with the pointed end of the corm facing up. Plant three to five corms in each pot.
Gently tamp the soil on the corms and water thoroughly until you see the water drip out from the bottom of the pot. Dump out any extra water and set the pot in full sun.
Insert a stake next to each bulb or insert a large tomato cage around the corms if you are planting tall varieties that require support. Do this at planting time because you are likely to harm the roots if you insert the support when the plants are mature.
