Today marks the 64th anniversary of the first time a human voice was broadcast from space.

The Signal Communications by Orbiting Relay Equipment or SCORE launched on December 18th 1958, becoming the world’s first purpose-built communications satellite. Among the objectives for SCORE was to demonstrate whether it was feasible to broadcast messages from space to ground stations on earth. On board the satellite was a tape recorder that carried a Christmas greeting from President Dwight Eisenhower - the first ever human voice to be broadcast from space.
