Alex Lopez talks about the competition, his team, and the importance of training young masons. Instructor Lopez and Valley High School masonry students from Escondido, participated in the 17th Annual Top Notch Trowel & Jim Broncatello Perpetual Trophy competition. Other teams came from 4 schools in 3 counties: Ontario High School, AB Miller High School, and Boys Republic High School. It's a unique interscholastic masonry competition, and the only prestigious Perpetual Trophy of it's kind in Southern California. How's the competition go? All schools bring one Tender to support their team. And teammates build in 4 different Divisions in a timed skills challenge. Straight Lead, Sample Panel, Corner Lead, and 8 Ft. Long Wall [with two masons working together]. The Instructors don't judge. Industry leaders do! MITA Judges this year included 3rd generation masons, 2nd generation masons, Fastest Trowel champion masons, and Senior Foremen in our craft. What about the girls in the competition? One female was a team Tender, another female won the Straight Lead Division! Host school Boys Republic catered lunch for everyone. They raise their own Angus beef so the hamburgers were generously great. Boys Republic Instructor Steve Perez and his masonry classes did days of pre-event preparation to get the site ready. All Instructors, Danny Clayton, Kennie Ott, and Alex Lopez brought their eager first-time masonry students for the competition. It's for youth just starting to learn. Only the Tenders can be seasoned masonry students, with skills enough to support their whole team. Congratulations to all!
