The first-ever treaty which calls for the prohibition of nuclear weapons was adopted today (07 Jul) at the UN Headquarters in New York in what was described as an “historic moment for the international community.”

The treaty received the support of 122 countries, with Singapore abstaining and the Netherlands voting against the document. None of the nuclear armed nations took part in the negotiations for the treaty and thus were not present for the vote.

The treaty prohibits a full range of nuclear-weapons related activities including developing, testing, producing, manufacturing, acquiring, possessing and stockpiling all types of nuclear weapons.
A signing ceremony is set to take place on 20 September during this year’s General Debate of the General Assembly, and would enter into force 90 days after the 50th country submits it’s ratification instruments.

Speaking to reporters following the adoption, Costa Rica’s ambassador to the UN Elayne Whyte Gomez said this was the first multilateral nuclear treaty to be concluded in more than 20 years describing it as an “historic moment for the international community.”

She stressed that the treaty would set an international legal norm on the issue of nuclear weapons adding it took decades to work on the universalization of the Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) and changes over time have allowed all the Permanent Members of the Security Council to become members.

She said, “As the world evolves, the international community evolves, the geopolitics also evolve, we may see a change in circumstances that would allow current nuclear weapon states to decide to go to eliminate their nuclear weapons and become state parties.”
