Gene Hackman presents the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama to Shirley MaClaine for her role in Terms of Endearment. MaClaine says jokingly that she did expect to win and that it's thrilling to win the award, because everybody means it when they give it to you. She also says that it must have been confusing for the Hollywood Foreign Press to decide if the movie was drama or comedy and that a category life would be a lot easier. She jokes that since Jack Nicholson, Debra Winger and Jim aren't there she's there to take it all and if they keep giving her awards she will keep attending the show, because she deserves to win. She says that making the picture was like a roller coaster ride and that she looked really old in the movie. She jokingly thanks her make up artist for that. She tells the audience that director James Brooks had to overcome a lot of obstacles to make the movie happen. She thanks Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, Jim and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
