I asked Santa Mike what it takes to be a professional Santa. I expected him to talk about the beard. Maybe the costume. The jolly laugh.

Instead, he told me about Charles W. Howard Santa School. And a quote that changed everything for him:

"He errs who thinks that Santa enters through the chimney. Santa enters through the heart."

"You have to have the heart of Santa. More so than a big bushy beard or a jolly laugh."

He paused. Then kept going.

"You really have to get down to the person that is looking there for you. And believes that you are Santa. You have to have the story. And you have to be able to pivot in the middle of a question. You have to be a storyteller."

Then he said something that stopped me:

"It was a gift given to me. And I realize it's a gift. And I work very hard to make sure that when kids leave - and parents and grandparents - when they left me, they have the true meaning of Santa Claus and the heart of Santa."

After 21 years in law enforcement, seeing families at their absolute worst during the holidays, he became the person who creates pure Christmas joy. But he doesn't just show up in a suit. He reads every room. He carries quiet bells for kids with sensory needs. He pivots when a kid asks an unexpected question. He brings back parents' childhood memories of sitting on Santa's lap.

He sees what most people miss. And he shows up with heart.
