The Turner Gulch Fire that has been burning since July 10 is almost to 100% contained.

At last report – the fire is at 96% containment with 280 personnel fighting this fire.

Kimberly Smolt, public information officer with Northern Rockies Incident Management Team 3, says that large fires should never be completely extinguished, as it would put firefighters at risk. 

Instead, they mop up 150-200 feet along the perimeter, ensuring it is cold. When the land is cold, black lines are placed on the map indicating the fire is contained in that area and unlikely to go anywhere. But they are not able to completely get the remaining area due to height challenges.

“The last remaining piece of uncontained line is basically impossible to put line on. It's extremely steep. It's got rocks country. So that will be monitored. But it's not actually possible to show black right now on this map. But the team that's coming in on Wednesday of 700 Wednesday will be keeping an eye on that and making sure it doesn't go anywhere,” Smolt said.

According to officials, there are three crews, eight engines, four engines, one masticator and two helicopters.

Heavy rain on burned landscapes can lead to mudslides or debris flows. the state is monitoring nearby Highway 141, which is muddy due to recent rain. 

Line restoration, such as suppression repair work, is being done to stabilize the area and prevent debris flows.
