(Eric) The day started well in this small white studio. As usual, I have my holographic sheets, my tubes and some blades.
I set my camera for a 6-seconds exposure, and I paint around Lindsey with my lights. This is how I have been expressing my art for the past 12 years.

(Kim) Before we started creating, I shared a few concepts of the technique with Lindsey. [video: your task is to stay still…] Holding the breath & looking intently at an object in one’s field of view are helpful ways to remain stable and still in the dark, which is essential to what we do. As she is a very skilled dancer & performer, I knew she would be able to meet the challenge. And she did.

(Eric) After the studio session, we drove for over an hour to get to a location where we could feel immersed in nature. We love working in a studio, but creating outdoors is where we feel at home the most. We didn’t have much expectation, as we didn’t know the place and knew we would have very little time to scout and find a beautiful composition before the blue hour would begin.

(Kim) The blue hour is always a short and intense moment of creation, and it’s even more amplified when we shoot in a complex location like the ocean shore. Managing the tide, the crashing waves, the loudness of the environment and the sharp rocks doesn’t make the process any easier.

(Eric) But working as a team made it possible to happen. Kim would do many shots of light-painting while I would set my settings & composition, then we would switch roles and I would do the light-painting for the last series.


(Kim) We know very well that the conditions in which we usually create our art are not easy or comfortable. For Lindsey, it was her first time and her performance was flawless. It was a joy to make art with her and to witness her bravery, perseverance and generosity in the act of creation.
