NASA Astronauts Reveal When Boeing Starliner Had Trouble! They Almost Froze
=======================================
NASA astronauts during Starliner journey to the space station last summer. Given the danger, tension, and high stakes involved, let’s talk more, in today’s episode of NR STUDIO. NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have remained aboard the International Space Station (ISS) since June 2024, after Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft experienced technical difficulties that thwarted their planned return. The crewed test flight was originally planned to last eight days and was intended to serve as the final crewed test flight before Boeing began rotating standard crews to the ISS under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. After returning safely to Earth, the astronaut duo were given the opportunity to recount the ins and outs of their experience during the expedition. In their assessment, it appears that the most challenging came when Starliner encountered a problem on its approach to the orbiting laboratory, significantly testing its maneuverability and navigation systems. In a predictable sequence of events, five of the spacecraft’s 28 reaction control system thrusters malfunctioned as the spacecraft approached the space station. These thrusters play a critical role in facilitating minor orbital corrections. Additionally, the helium leaks presented another significant challenge. Engineers identified a total of five helium leaks, with one detected before the flight. These leaks affected the propulsion system, which relies on helium to maintain pressure inside the fuel lines that are essential for maneuvering. NASA delayed the first docking attempt to mitigate this issue. The astronauts kept the spacecraft outside the invisible exclusion zone around the ISS, as a safety precaution, while they troubleshooted the malfunctioning thrusters. Fortunately, the four malfunctioning Starliner jets were successfully retrieved through the collaborative efforts of Wilmore and Williams, who worked with flight controllers to conduct thruster tests. NASA and Boeing were able to mitigate the leaks before proceeding with the docking procedure. Ultimately, Starliner successfully completed its docking with the ISS as planned. At first, everything seemed normal for these seasoned astronauts, who were decorated veterans of NASA’s space shuttle program and Russian Soyuz missions. In reality, their expedition aboard Starliner to the ISS proved to be far more intense than anyone had anticipated. As Williams explains, they found themselves in a very precarious situation, facing a challenge that tested their skills and composure to the utmost.
