Ghana Gold Rush: African Nation Is Losing Billions From Illegal Mining

The gold mining industry in Ghana is causing environmental damage and pollution, leading to protests and calls for bans on small-scale mining operations. As the African country nears the national elections on Dec. 7, politicians have tried to reassure registered mines that they will be shielded from the government’s crack down on illegal activities known as “galamsey”.
