Why have games shifted from direct rewards to loot chests?

Trick question: most games still have direct rewards to keep you engaged while you level up and unlock rewards that way, but loot chests pander to another emotion of ours: curiosity.

The most obvious reason games do loot chests I feel is to keep players coming back to play a game over and over again. Almost like how a casino's are a money sink hole with no return on investment - except that the developers are giving out free slot plays all day every day.

Giving content and rewards through a roulette system also seems like more fun than it should be. Most people like seeing their progress toward unlocking that awesome rare skin or special emote, and yet people will grind out dozens of matches of Overwatch to just get a chance at some of there rarer loot.

The flip side of that coin to unlocking those coveted skin is just to pay money and unlock it directly, but not all games have this option. Which can really make something unique feel even more special. Thus creating an even bigger urge to keep playing just for a chance at that special something.

There's nothing wrong with the loot chest system, I just find it odd that so many things have shifted from secrets and drop rates due to how fast information travels and the amount of players out there that we now had to create an alternate way of letting people unlock content.

You know, besides just... BUYING all of it hahaha.
