The Basilica of Saint Servatius in Maastricht is considered the oldest surviving church in the Netherlands. It was built on the burial site of Saint Servatius, a 4th-century Armenian-born bishop and the first bishop of Maastricht, who died around 384 AD. The earliest church on this spot dates back to the late Roman period, but the current Romanesque structure was mainly constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries, with later Gothic additions.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the basilica developed into one of the most important pilgrimage sites in north-western Europe, attracting thousands of visitors during the Heiligdomsvaart, a large-scale relic pilgrimage held every seven years. The church’s treasury holds exceptional medieval reliquaries, liturgical objects, and the famous Noodkist, the shrine of Saint Servatius.

Over the centuries, the basilica has undergone multiple restorations, preserving its massive westwork, crypts, and richly decorated interior. Today, it remains an active Catholic church, a minor basilica since 1985, and a key monument in Maastricht’s religious and cultural history.
