Hydrography—a field that traditionally involves mapping of the seabed for safe ship navigation—now encompasses other research areas, including marine environmental protection, physical oceanography and the development of autonomous vehicles. It is critical to the oceanographic, medical, desalination, underwater photonics and marine environmental research conducted at KAUST and work carried out in partnership with the Saudi Aviation Investigation Bureau. 

In 2005, the International Hydrographic Organization and the United Nations designated June 21 as annual World Hydrography Day. Experts from KAUST’s Coastal and Marine Resources Core Lab are teaming up this year to help the University and its partners celebrate the event and its 2020 theme of “Enabling Autonomous Technologies.” Activities will include hydrographic seminars; the creation of a website focusing on the area; and hydrographic e-learning opportunities. Take part to learn about the University’s goal of developing a new era in hydrography and oceanographic autonomous technologies.
