Tras el primer vuelo los juveniles de azor entran en la etapa conocida como dependencia postfledging. Aunque funcionalmente voladores, aún carecen de habilidades perfeccionadas de caza y navegación territorial.
Durante este periodo, que puede durar entre 30 y 45 días, el macho adulto (♂) asume la mayor carga de aprovisionamiento. Su rol se vuelve crucial, ya que continúa realizando aportaciones tróficas diarias, depositando presas en lugares visibles para fomentar la autonomía progresiva de los juveniles
La hembra adulta (♀), cuyo rol durante la incubación y primeros días de cría fue dominante, reduce paulatinamente su presencia directa, aunque conserva un papel disuasorio y defensivo frente a intrusos o predadores
Esta etapa es clave para el aprendizaje de técnicas de: Persecución activa en vuelo rasante, Caza por emboscada desde posadero. Reconocimiento de presas viables. Lectura del entorno y evaluación de riesgo.
Los jóvenes también comienzan a experimentar interacciones agonísticas con sus hermanos, desarrollando jerarquías de acceso al alimento, un paso preparatorio para su futura dispersión.
La independencia final llega cuando los juveniles realizan capturas con éxito. Entonces abandonan progresivamente el territorio natal y entran en fase de dispersión juvenil, en busca de un hábitat disponible donde establecerse. Esta fase está sujeta a alta mortalidad (hasta el 70% no supera el primer año), siendo el periodo más crítico en la vida de un azor

Mona and Mick's nesting concludes with two young goshawks ready to fly. It's a reminder that the survival of each species depends on a balance as fragile as it is valuable, and it's in our hands to protect it.
After their first flight, juvenile goshawks enter the stage known as post-fledging dependence. Although functionally able to fly, they still lack refined hunting and territorial navigation skills.
During this period, which can last between 30 and 45 days, the adult male (♂) assumes the major provisioning burden. Her role becomes crucial, as she continues to provide daily trophic contributions, depositing prey in visible locations to encourage the juveniles' progressive independence.
The adult female (♀), whose role during incubation and the first days of nesting was dominant, gradually reduces her direct presence, although she maintains a deterrent and defensive role against intruders or predators.
This stage is key for learning techniques such as: active pursuit in low-flying flight, ambush hunting from a perch, recognition of viable prey, reading the environment, and risk assessment.
The juveniles also begin to experience agonistic interactions with their siblings, developing food access hierarchies, a preparatory step for their future dispersal.
Final independence arrives when the juveniles successfully capture prey. They then gradually abandon their natal territory and enter the juvenile dispersal phase, in search of an available habitat in which to settle. This phase is subject to high mortality (up to 70% do not survive the first year), making it the most critical period in a goshawk's life.
