Описание к видео The Rise of a Black Chief Executive at Boeing

James A. Bell, former CFO and corporate president of the ‪@Boeing‬ Company and a board member at ‪@Apple‬ and Dow Chemical, delivered the keynote address that launched Black History Month UCLA Anderson. A distinguished alumnus of California State University, Los Angeles, Bell talked about his upbringing in South Los Angeles and why he chose to major in accounting. He described his experience managing 200,000 people, observing that the most effective leaders recognize that they don’t know everything, are able to bring out the best in others and always support their team. As a distinct minority advancing in corporate America, Bell said he regarded racism as the problem of the racist. His task was to stay focused on opportunities — though fewer may have presented themselves — and take each career step he needed to.

Bell has served with the nonprofit organization New Leaders, New Schools to recruit and train school leaders focused on improving educational results for students from low-income communities. He encouraged Anderson’s Black MBA students to regard education as “the key to freedom” and take responsibility for their own career success.

In partnership with the Black Business Students Association, the Investment Finance Associate and UCLA Anderson’s Fink Center, the event was facilitated by Jamaal Powell (’22), an Anderson Student Investment Fund portfolio manager and former intern at Boeing.
