For a moment, the Jockey Club Gold Cup yesterday looked as if it was going to be a real horse race. Easy Goer had cruised to the lead round the stretch turn, but Cryptoclearance was making a stirring bid and drawing alongside the leader at the top of the stretch.

''Now we'll find out what this horse is made of!'' shouted Marshall Cassidy, the Belmont Park announcer.

It did not take long for Easy Goer to prove he is made of strong stuff. Easy Goer accelerated anew, drew away from his challenger, and went on to score a four-length victory over Cryptoclearance to add yesterday's $1,099,000 Gold Cup to his burgeoning list of racing triumphs.

Easy Goer, who paid $2.20 for $2 to win as the heavy favorite, ran the mile and a half in 2:29.20 under a flawless ride from Pat Day. In the Running

The colt has won five consecutive Grade I races: the Belmont Stakes, the Whitney Handicap, the Travers Stakes, the Woodward Handicap and the Gold Cup.
