The defense's main job is to prevent the offense from scoring.

They do this by disrupting offensive plays. They block, tackle, cover offensive players and try to take the ball away.

To protect their goal, their first barrier is the defensive line - who try to make sure the offense doesn't run through them with the ball,

Then behind the line, there's players in the defensive backfield. They try to make sure the offense doesn't complete a forward pass, and also try to stop a ball carrier that got through the line.

Like the offense, the defense also calls plays and formations. They try to anticpate the offense's strategy. But the defense also needs to be flexible - so it can adjust as the play unfolds.

One common defensive play is the Blitz, which is usually called when the defense strongly suspects the offense will call a passing play.

On a blitz, one or more players in the defensive backfield, who usually drop back to defend aqainst the pass, INSTEAD sprint directly towards the quarterback on the snap of the football.

Sometimes, the Blitz can lead to a big play - like a sac. A sac is when a defensive player breaks through the offense and tackles the QB.

A sac is big, because it usually means that the QB was pushed back, and actually lost yards. It wastes a down, and can really beat up a QB.

Even if's he not sacked, a Blitz usually puts pressure on the QB to get rid of the ball quickly. Having to get rid of the ball quickly can force a bad throw, which can lead to an incomplete pass or even better an intercepted pass.....

An interception means a defender was able to catch/intercept a ball thrown by the offense, ususally from the QB to his receiver. The defense has now gained possession of the ball and can try to return it for a TD.

The defense is always trying to strip away or dislodge the ball from the offensive player. If they can knock the ball loose, then they created a fumble - that's a loose ball that's still live.

Either team is allowed recover a fumble. If the defense recovers it ... then again, they gained possession of the ball and can try to return it for a TD.

If they don't score...the defense still retains possession and gives the ball to their own offensive unit to try to score.

Both fumbles and interceptions are also known as a turnover can change the momentum of a game.

So, even though it's not really the defense's responsibilities to score, there are ways they can... as I mentioned by a creating turnover and then there's the uncommon safety....

The most common way for a safety to happen is when an offensive player has the ball and gets tackled in his own endzone. Then 2 points go to the defense.

Let me explain the phrase, Goal-line Stand - it's when the defense has their backs pushed up against their own goal line. There's no room error and they have to hault the offensive in their tracks - sometimes for multiple attempts.

So, if they can to hold off the offense from scoring a TD - it's considered an impressive by the defense.
