In this festival, chrysanthemum flowers bloom in China and thus its wine and tea are consumed in this festival

And during this festival according to this fictional event in the movie, Curse of the golden flower, a rebellion led by the Prince (featuring Jay Chou) in support of the empress (Gong Li in the movie) took place with disastrous consequences. This song relays the sentiments behind the rebellion and the sadness therein. As a footnote, it is interesting to note that when this festival began, it was only celebrated by Royal Families!
