To commemorate his passing on the 12th of July 2023 here a video of Gustavo Badell competing in bodybuilding's most prestigious competition, the Mr. Olympia, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 30, 2006. Gustavo placed 6th.
Gustavo Badell, known as "The Freakin' Rican," was a Venezuelan-born Puerto Rican IFBB professional bodybuilder (November 3, 1972 – July 12, 2023). He began weightlifting at 15 to improve his boxing physique, quickly gaining muscle and shifting focus to bodybuilding. At 19, he won the 1991 Junior Caribbean Bodybuilding Championships, turning pro in 1997 after winning the Caribbean Championships. His first IFBB appearance was the 1998 Grand Prix of Germany, and he competed in the New York Pro (1999, 14th) and Ironman Pro Invitational (2000, 18th).
Badell's career initially saw modest placings, with a low of 24th at the 2002 Mr. Olympia. With coaching from Milos Sarcev, his performance surged, leading to a remarkable 3rd place at the 2004 Mr. Olympia—the greatest single-year leap in Olympia history—and 3rd again in 2005, where he also won the Challenge Round against legends like Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler. His notable victories include the 2005 Ironman Pro, 2006 San Francisco Pro, and 2009 Atlantic City Pro. He retired in 2012 after placing 13th at the Arnold Classic, later coaching athletes and promoting bodybuilding in Puerto Rico.
Badell was featured in Flex magazine and MuscleTech ads, known for his massive legs, thick arms, and high-volume training style, emphasizing moderate weights and training to failure. He died at 50 in Kissimmee, Florida, reportedly from a stroke, possibly linked to prior kidney issues and a transplant from his sister. He left behind his wife, Mariangel, and seven children: Gustavo Andres, Liz Valeria, Barbie Ann, Nicole Marie, Michael Gustavo, Christian Carlos, and Sabella.
