Kalighat Painting refers to the class of paintings on hand-made paper with hand-made colors produced by a group of local artists known as “Patuas”.

Kalighat, a neighborhood in southern Kolkata (Calcutta), is where these patuas lived came to be known as “Patua Para”, meaning “artist’s locale”. The locality still exists, but very few patuas live there and practice this art.

Of lately, Kalighat Paintings have gained worldwide recognition.

The intent of this documentary film is to appreciate the paintings of Kalighat, which is perhaps one of the most important school of Indian paintings that is truly modern in its own form.

Special gratitude to Kalam Patua and Sonali Chitrakar.
