The house where Sully and Jason are staying is deliberately set on fire in an arson attack carried out by a racist group. While Sully manages to survive by jumping out of a window as the flames spread rapidly, his young friend Jason is trapped inside. Despite Sully's frantic shouting and all his rescue efforts, Jason brutally burns to death in the flames. With this loss, Sully once again says goodbye to his own unlived childhood that he was attempting to revive with Jason.

This death obliterates all emotional connections and last vestiges of innocence in Sully's character. The promise of a normal life made to Jason remains unfulfilled forever. The profound grief and guilt over his failure to protect Jason act as the final catalyst, driving Sully to completely shut down emotionally and return to the cycle of violence on the streets, more ruthless than before.
