Joint village land use planning (JVLUP) is a process of local level land use planning with the opportunity of protecting shared cross-border village grazing lands and water for pastoralists in Tanzania. The process was piloted by the Government of Tanzania, ILRI and local partners with support from IFAD, as an International Land Coalition (ILC) collaboration. This film describes the application of the approach in Kinnapa district, Manyara region. It includes steps in the process such as participatory land use mapping, establishing governance structures, and developing a joint village land use agreement. It explains how JVLUP has helped to stop land use conflicts in the district whilst also laying the foundation for improved livestock production through PRM (participatory rangeland management). The process is now being upscaled in other pastoral villages. The process is explained by Paulina Ngurumwa, an officer from the KINNAPA Development Association, the local NGO that was instrumental in the piloting process. Produced by ILRI (2021).
