I experimented with using $3 Turtlewax Chrome Polish and rust remover to remove rust from the chrome and painted surfaces of a 1972 Raleigh 20 inch folding bicycle.

I did not want to remove the original paint or spend a lot of time so was limited in what I could use to remove rust from both chrome and painted parts of the bike.
I found hundreds of videos on YouTube concerning removing rust or converting it but no one else was using Turtlewax chrome polish on rusty painted surfaces.
I confess the polish will not remove heavy built up rust but did an acceptable job of removing simple surface rust from painted surfaces and was quite good on
chrome which is its intended use.

An alternative to the polish used if you merely want to convert the rust with a substance you could merely brush on would be phosphoric acid or Ospho.
I imagine even diet coke might work on light rust when scrubbing with foil as there is phosphoric acid in coke, but then you would need to rinse it off with water
before applying a sealer.

I will post another video soon covering all the alternatives there are for removing rust using commercial or DIY components. I am also starting a rust playlist.

The bike is not finished and it was never my intention to do a complete restoration, I merely wanted to see how well Turtlewax chrome polish would work on painted surfaces. I am almost certain parts of the bike that still has rough paint has rust underneath and will rust again even though I coated the surface with wax.
Eventually, the bike will have to have the rust removed to bare metal and sealed or repainted. In the meantime, I have a crusty 45-year-old folding bike to
play around with that cost me some wheel bearings that I replaced and aluminum foil from the dollar store and a $3 bottle of Turtlewax Chrome polish and rust remover.
