Nearly 50 years ago, the Red Wolf was declared extinct in the wild. The few that remained were moved into captivity, where a breeding program began. Today, fewer than 20 can be found in the wild, and just 200 remain in managed care. And with so few, the species is trapped in a genetic bottleneck.

But wait…along the Texas coast, animals once dismissed as coyotes were discovered to carry rare Red Wolf DNA. This breakthrough sparked a bold new strategy to rescue the species using cutting-edge science.

Through genetic sequencing, cloning, and advanced gene editing, we are working to build a more genetically diverse Red Wolf population. These efforts aim to support their conservation without disrupting wild packs, and ultimately, to return strong, healthy Red Wolves to their rightful place in the wild.
