3 myths about leaving your leaves on the ground this fall to support habitat:

Myth 1: That you need to leave all the leaves right where they fall.

Do you want to relocate them from walkways and driveways so no one slips and falls? Do that.

Do you want to move them off your lawn because that piece of lawn is important to you? Go for it.

Myth 2: That it’s all or nothing.

I like to keep all of my leaves, but that’s not the only way to do it.

Do you want to leave your front yard looking traditionally tidy? You can leave the leaves in your backyard and still build habitat.

Do you have kids or dogs that track wet leaves into your house? Maybe you have a corner of the yard or raised garden beds where you can leave your leaves.

Myth 3: That you have to keep the leaves there forever.

I like to leave them all year because there are many benefits to that, but you will still help overwintering pollinators and feed birds during the cold months if you wait until late spring to clean them up.

The bottom line is don’t let perfection stop you from taking steps to build habitat for your local ecosystem.
