This man converted to Mormonism just before Joseph Smith's death and presented a not insubstantial challenge to Brigham Young for leadership of the LDS movement. After he failed to win the succession, Strang declared himself King of Beaver Island. Despite having followers who squatted on land they didn't own and engaged in piracy, Strang secured acquittal in federal court and then won a seat in the Michigan House of Representatives. Ultimately, however, his fascinating career of petty fraud and tyranny over women's attire came to an end when he finally alienated too many people in both Wisconsin and Michigan.
