Welcome to this author interview with New York Times bestseller Ariel Lawhon, where we unpack some of her writing process around how to write historical fiction.

Ariel is the author of, most recently, Code Name Helene, which was one of my favorite books of 2020.

Code Name Helene is based on the real-life story of Nancy Wake, a "socialite spy" who was one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance. She was known for her signature red lipstick and her ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces.

In this interview, Ariel and I discuss her research process, her favorite book on writing craft, whether she's a "planner" or a "pantser," and how to write really intense scenes.
