“In David Mamet’s plays, the men need each other for affirmation of their philosophies,” said Atlantic Theater Company director, Hilary Hinckle about the award-winning playwright, author and filmmaker, in this archival clip from WNET’s early 2000’s arts & culture program, “EGG, the Arts Show.”

Mamet’s “Sexual Perversity in Chicago,” which Hinckle directed in 2000 at the Atlantic Theater Company, explores the love lives of two men and two women in working-class Chicago the 1970s. The male characters’ competitive, “macho” behavior and aggressive jargon reveal how men interact with each other in the world, power dynamics that are at play, and the complexities of male identity and ego.

“The point of being macho stems from fear,” Hinckle added about the recurring theme of masculinity that appears across Mamet’s body of work.

The award-winning playwright is best known for “Glengarry Glen Ross,” which received a Pulitzer Prize in 1984; A new Broadway revival of the play runs through June 28, 2025 and features Bob Odenkirk, Kieran Culkin and Bill Burr.

Mamet was part of the creative ensemble that founded Atlantic Theater Company in 1985 in New York City, which has become an off-Broadway force in the theater world. Another founder of the company was his good friend, award-winning actor William H. Macy, who originated several roles in Mamet’s plays and films, including one of Mamet’s best-known plays, “American Buffalo.”
