Top Three (3) Grafting Methods | Year-Round Options

Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert @ https://ivorganics.com/ explains three (3) of his favorite grafting methods in detail: (1) Cleft Grafting, (2) Approach Grafting, and (3) Piggy Back Grafting. Cleft grafting is ideal when you’ve got a scion cutting from the desired type of plant you want to graft onto a rootstock on your property. However, if you can graft the scion and rootstock on its own roots for the short-term (Approach Graft) or longer-term (Piggy Back Graft), you can enjoy a much longer grafting season & much higher grafting success rates! Use grafting to create a multi-fruiting tree on a single rootstock, control tree size, disease resistance, root rot resistance, drought tolerance, and so much more! Cleft Grafting: Deciduous Trees such as Prunus (Peaches, Plums, Apricots, Almonds, Cherries, Nectarines, Cherries), Apples, Pomegranates, etc, should be grafted after the last chance of frost has passed, but before the buds on your scions begin to swell or 'pop' into blooms & shoots. However, topicals such as citrus, avocados & mangos graft better in early spring (or early fall is an option too).

Approach Grafting & Piggyback Grafting: Any plant/ trees year round! However, recommended best time is during the growing seasons of Spring, Summer & early Fall. The goal is to get the grafts to heal and grow well together during the active growing season-- so, the sooner you accomplish success in the growing season, the sooner the plants will recover.
